How an inspection works

  1. Book

Book online or call. Tell us which inspection you need. If your insurer or the registry gave you a form, mention it.

  2. Bring the paperwork

Bring the vehicle and any required forms (see the requirements below). Missing paperwork can mean we cannot issue the certificate.

  3. We inspect

A licensed technician goes through the vehicle to the provincial standard. Most inspections take 1–2 hours, depending on the vehicle.

  4. You get the results

We go over every item with you, with photos from our digital inspection. Nothing gets repaired without your OK.

  5. Pass or repair

Pass: you get your certificate or report. Fail: you get a written list of what needs fixing and an estimate. Then you can book a re-inspection.

Did not pass?

Re-inspections

A fail is not the end. You get a list of exactly what needs fixing, and a re-inspection only looks at those items, as long as you come back in time.

10 days

Out-of-Province: Alberta gives you 10 days from the original inspection to fix the failed items and bring the vehicle back. Within 10 days, only the repairs are checked. After 10 days, the vehicle needs a full new inspection.

You can have the repairs done anywhere, by us or another shop.

  • Insurance inspections: once the failed items are fixed, we re-check them and update the report for your insurer.
  • Commercial (CVIP): the unit cannot get its decal until the defects are fixed and re-checked.
  • Our policy: We only do re-inspections on vehicles we did the initial inspection on.
Alberta requirements

What each inspection needs

Who needs it, what to bring, and the deadlines that catch people out.

Out-of-Province Inspection

Book

Who needs it

  • Any vehicle registered outside Alberta needs to pass before you can get Alberta plates.
  • This includes vehicles from other provinces and from outside Canada.

What to bring

  • The vehicle.
  • A Request for Vehicle Inspection form. You buy it at any Alberta registry before you come in.
  • From outside Canada: your RIV paperwork (Transport Canada Form 1).

Good to know

  • After the inspection we give you a signed certificate. You have 14 days to take it to a registry. After that it is no longer accepted and you need a new inspection.
  • Some vehicles are exempt: brand-new vehicles bought from a factory dealer in the last 90 days, and some private vehicles from BC, SK or MB (current model year plus the 3 years before it, or older with a passed BC/SK/MB government inspection in the last 90 days).
  • No exemptions for salvage, rebuilt, non-repairable, unsafe, right-hand drive, custom/homebuilt, kit cars, or lifted or lowered vehicles. Ask the registry if you are not sure.

Commercial Vehicle Inspection (CVIP)

Book

Who needs it

  • Every year: trucks, truck-tractors, trailers and semi-trailers over 11,794 kg registered gross weight running inside Alberta, or over 4,500 kg crossing provincial borders.
  • Every 6 months: buses with more than 10 seats, including the driver (not personal-use buses).

What to bring

  • The unit (and the trailer, if it is being inspected too).
  • Your registration, so we can confirm the registered weight.

Good to know

  • You cannot drive a commercial vehicle on the highway without a valid inspection certificate and decal.
  • The driver has to be able to show the certificate if a peace officer asks for it. Keep it in the cab.
  • Book before your decal expires. A unit that runs out of date has to be parked until it passes.

Insurance Inspection

Book

Who needs it

  • Insurers usually ask for one on vehicles 12 years or older.
  • Some insurers also ask for one on modified or rebuilt vehicles, or when you change your policy. Your insurer decides.

What to bring

Good to know

  • This report goes to your insurance company or broker, not the registry.
  • Insurers often want it within about 14 days of starting the policy. Check your deadline with them.
  • We check steering and suspension, tires, brakes and brake lines, windshield and wipers, lights, engine, exhaust, body, seat belts, and any modifications.

Pre-Purchase Inspection

Book

Who needs it

  • Not required by law. It is for anyone buying a used vehicle who wants to know what they are getting.

What to bring

  • The vehicle, with the seller’s OK to inspect it.
  • The ad or listing, if you have it. We will compare what is advertised against what we find.

Good to know

  • This is not a government certificate. If the vehicle is from out of province, it still needs an Out-of-Province Inspection to register.
  • You get an honest report on what needs work now, what will need it soon, and what it might cost.

This is a summary of the Government of Alberta rules, current as of fall 2026. Rules can change, so for the official word see:Alberta — Out-of-province vehicle inspections · Alberta — Commercial vehicle inspections · Alberta — Registering a vehicle.
